Kyle gets the girl!
In this episode, Amanda (Kirsten Prout) has finally agreed to go on a date with the boy next door. But — as we all know by now — he is no ordinary teenager, and he must contend with a cryptic warning about his trainer, Tom Foss (Nicholas Lea) while preparing for the biggest night of his life. This leaves Kyle to wonder who — if anybody — he can truly trust with the complete truth about who he really is and the circumstances of his past. In the meantime, Jessi (Jaimie Alexander) begins to rebel against the restrictions Emily (Leah Cairns) is putting on her social life.
Jessi takes a monumentally terrifying step into her new life by attending her first day of high school (at least it was monumentally terrifying for me), and it is no coincidence that it is the same school the Trager kids attend. While Jessi is off unknowingly fulfilling her part in Mada Corp’s twisted plan, Emily has taken another step in infiltrating the family as well, by “accidentally” bumping into Stephen (Bruce Thomas) in the lunch line at work. So, it appears Project Disrupt Kyle’s Life is in full swing.
Moving matters even further along, Jessi and Kyle have finally met face to face. Kyle found Jessi lounging in his bathtub/bed. This highly-anticipated meeting fell a bit flat. Considering the weird vibes they get while near each other, there weren’t any of the fireworks or explosive forces of nature that were subtly hinted at in the past few episodes.
Maybe the reason the meeting fizzled has something to do with the fact that Jessi seems far more interested in Declan (Chris Olivero) than the strange connection she and Kyle share. But, she really needs to work on her flirting skills. I mean, it’s a bit aggressive for a teenage girl to tell the boy she likes that she would like to make out again. Then again, it did work, and you can’t fight results … right? But, after being discovered mid-slobber by her sister, Jessi is about to find out what the life of a teenage girl is really like … prison.
Still, Jessi seems to have a better handle on this relationship thing than Kyle does. While Jessi has no problem going after what she wants — albeit in a strange way — Kyle is all flustered, confused and discombobulated by his impending date with Amanda.
Meanwhile, Lori (April Matson) and her best friend — on a temporary break from all things male — decide to go to the big school shindig together. That decision doesn’t sit well with their prehistoric principal, who has advised them that there will be no same-sex dates allowed. Now, Lori and her friend aren’t gay, and the only point they are trying to make is that they don’t need men to have a good time at a school dance, but when Josh’s (Jean-Luc Bilodeau) new friend — who happens to have two moms — finds out, a protest ensues.
While I find protests entertaining, watching Josh teach Kyle to dance was even better. I know what you’re thinking — Kyle being Kyle, he immediately caught on and turned into Justin Timberlake on speed — and you’re right. At this rate, he’ll discover the cure for the common cold before the season is over. But, here’s the night’s big shocker: a girl-on-girl kiss

between Lori and her friend. It was done to prove a point, but it’s extremely impressive to see how far family-friendly TV has come.
Because all those involved in the protest were banned from going to the school dance, Lori organized an alternative one, which I must say looked a lot more fun than most of my high school dances. And, in the “ahh” moment of the evening, Kyle and Amanda shared their first slow dance. Oh, the innocence of first love. Sadly, while Kyle was getting a taste of the excitement of that first love, Lori was experiencing the sheer agony of it. It’s still a little strange to me that Declan’s disappointment in Kyle caused such a meltdown, but that didn’t stop him from telling Kyle about Tom Foss’s threat to Lori.
Before the night was over, Jessi had caused an electrical charge that knocked out all the power, and Lori was knocked unconscious, presumably to make good on Foss’s threat to harm her if Declan didn’t cease and desist his snooping into Kyle’s life. This leaves one to wonder what side Foss is really on.
This is just the kind of cliff-hanger that keeps us coming back for more.
