GREEK -- "Separation Anxiety"

By Jennifer Larson

Part of all Greek life is charity work, and the Zeta sisters are serious about their obligations. That being said, when a snafu in the Zeta community-service schedule puts Casey (Spencer Grammer) in the position of working with a religious group, she begins to wonder if she is the right girl for the job. Meanwhile, Rusty (Jacob Zachar) and Cappie (Scott M. Foster) try to mend their lovesick hearts by keeping themselves distracted. And, we all know how good fraternity boys are at distracting themselves. Honestly, can’t they just stay in bed with their pjs on and eat a pint of decadent chocolate ice cream, the way girls do? It’s a lot less chaotic and doesn’t bring everybody else down around us. Poor Cappie, he came so close to getting his ladylove back, in last week’s episode of GREEK. But, real life has a way of getting in the way, and our boy Cappie isn’t ready to grow up and take life seriously, at least not seriously enough for the object of his affection, Casey.

With Casey deciding to go ahead with the laveliering ceremony, she has solidified her relationship with Evan (Jake McDorman), much to the chagrin of some of her sisters, not to mention her old flame. But, Evan is on the fast track to success, and Casey finds that more intriguing than the fun and games that go along with being in a relationship with Cappie, at least for now. Ah young love; it’s all about where you will be in ten years. Well, at least it is for some girls, and I guess Casey thinks she’s one of them. Whether or not Casey lives to regret that decision remains to be seen, but if I were a betting girl, I’d say that relationship isn’t meant to be.

These are the things all young adults go through in every part of the country, on a daily basis. Showcasing these everyday struggles through the eyes of sorority sisters and fraternity brothers isn’t as crazy as one may think. Learning to deal with people from all walks of life and myriad lifestyles is something we all go through. These people are but a microcosm of society, but represent the socio-economical diversity of the rest of the country perfectly. Take for example the competent advice Cappie gives Rusty, when asked whether he should tell his new girl that he loves her. Recently heartbroken himself, Cappie is bitter and uninterested in helping love flourish for others, and sends Rusty off with an even worse idea of how to handle love than he would get from a harlequin romance novel.

In fact, nobody is doing well in the romance department, in tonight’s episode of GREEK. Ashleigh (Amber Hill) was forced to break up with her pretentious boyfriend, by her loving Zeta sisters, Calvin (Paul James) is questioning the commitment of his new guy and Casey is continuing to pretend that life is oh so sweet with Evan (Jake McDorman.) Be that as it may, Rusty soldiers on with his plan to tell his girl he loves her. The response to his declaration of love was a hearty thank you. Oh, the utter humiliation! Meanwhile, love between sisters is on dangerous ground as well. Ashleigh isn’t feeling the support she wants from Casey, so she decides to try out a new best friend … Rebecca (Dilshad Vadsaria.) Come on, this girl is nobody’s best friend, least of all Ashleigh’s. And, it’s really bad timing, seeing how they have a show to put on for their charity event. Maybe they should take a page from the boys, who have decided to mend their broken hearts by visiting a strip club. Oh please, how cliché.

Unfortunately, the charity event is the least of Casey and Ashleigh’s problems, after Casey sees a text from Ashleigh’s ex, confirming that she never actually broke up with him after all. Oh what a tangled web we weave … yada, yada, yada. This points to the fact that love can be difficult, regardless of the type of love it is. Sisters are supposed to be completely honest with each other and share their innermost feelings. But, they are also supposed to support each other whether they agree with their decisions or not. Luckily, Casey realizes this before irretrievable damage is done. And Rusty, well he realized how creepy it was to tell Jen K (Jessica Rose) that he loved her after only three weeks, and managed to salvage his relationship as well. So, all is well for the Cartwrights, at least for this week.
