SUPERNATURAL -- "The Kids Are Alright"

By Sabrina Cognata

Once again we’re confronted with the fact that Dean’s sold his soul to a demon and he’s got less than a year to live.  Dean (Jensen Ackles) immediately brings this up at the start of the episode exclaiming that he wants to go check out a case & make a pit stop to see a woman he had a wild night with eight years prior.  Sam (Jared Padalecki) tries to talk Dean out of it, but Dean wins this round by throwing his impending doom in Sam’s face.  Once the duo gets to Indiana, Dean tells Sam not to wait around for him and he heads on over to visit his former flame, Lisa Braden.

When Dean gets to Lisa’s house she accepts the unannounced arrival with a slow sense of shock and tells him she’s having a party and not just any party, but a children’s party for her 8-year-old son, Ben.  Let me tell you something about this kid Ben, he is the miniature version of Dean.  The 8-year-old version of me is totally pining over him right now.  And now that I sound like Mary Kaye Letourneau I guess I will continue with the review.  While at this party Dean notices that something is not right with the children of Cisero, Indiana.  He leaves there questioning if Ben is a Winchester & trying to figure out what’s wrong with these children.

While Dean’s trying to figure out what’s going on with Lisa, Ben and the strange children of Cisero, Sam receives a visit from the mysterious blonde that saved him from the sinful demons of last week.  She tells him to dig deeper into his past, and the past of his mother.  It turns out anyone in contact with his mother, before her death, is now dead.  When the mysterious girl shows up again later on, Sam demands she tell him who she is, so she flashes her demon eyes at him.  Sam goes bizerk and the girl tells him that she has an invested interest in figuring out why Sam was so important to the Yellow Eyed Demon.  Sam runs to get holy water to use against her, but the girl tells him that she can help him undo the agreement Dean made that will take his life in less than a year if he works with her.  Sam is now working with a demon.  Good help’s so hard to find, you know?

One of the mother’s of the creepy children has acknowledged that something is wrong with her daughter.  Something creepy and wrong.  The child hovers around her constantly, dying to obtain her affection and partnership.  It’s creepy cause it isn’t how a mother and child interact, but how a mother and her stalker might.  In the meantime, Sam does some investigating and realizes that the people dying in this neighborhood are all people connected & close to the mothers.  After inspecting the area surrounding one of the victim’s accidents Sam comes to the conclusion that they are dealing with a Changeling.  SERIOUSLY, A CHANGELING, WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT?  The changeling captures the children and poses as them while sucking the life force out of the mother.  This can go on for a few weeks until the mother dies & by then the changeling will have moved on.

Dean continues to bond with Ben & secretly thinks Ben is his son.  After confronting Lisa once & she denying this fact Dean is unsure if she is telling the truth and decides to keep an eye on Ben.  I guess this means Ben & Lisa get to be the next target.  Since Dean & Sam know what they’re dealing with they also know how to exterminate it.  Changelings must be killed with fire.  Good thing the boys carry a flame thrower in the trunk, right?  Dean runs over to Lisa’s house where he realizes Ben’s now a Changeling.  Sam and Dean go into action looking for the underground layer where the Changelings are hiding the children.  With the speed of Mercury the guys stumble upon the Changeling’s layer.  Dean begins to free the children as Sam fights off the “Mother Changeling”.  With the help of Ben, the guys get the children safely away and kill off the Mother Changeling and therefore all the other Changelings.  Before Dean leaves he goes back with Lisa to check on Ben and make sure Ben isn’t his son.  Lisa assures him that Ben isn’t Dean’s kin.  Dean looks sort of sad.  Seriously, I wish this kid was Dean’s cause at least it would give Dean something to live for, thicken the plot possibilities and because I think having a miniature Dean is total cute overload, don’t you?
