Somedays, it’s like I’d be better off if I lost all coherent memories and had to start from scratch. I guess I’m not the only person dying for a case of amnesia, Samantha (Christina Applegate) stars as a Psychiatrist woken up from a week long coma only to have retrograde amnesia. How much can you really tell about yourself if all your memories have been wiped out? Turns out not much. When Samantha wakes up her selfobsessed mother, Regina (Jean Smart), is hovering over her with a video camera talking to the people from Home Makeover. As Samantha says her first words her mother is asking her to repeat waking up because she missed getting it on camera. Regina, the stereotypical bad mother, how charming.
Slowly Samantha realizes who she is now is not who she was. Once discharged from the hospital she’s faced with having to go live with a boyfriend she doesn’t even know, the idea of living with a strange man versus a strange set of parents seems too much to bare and she decides to go home with her parents. When she arrives at their house her best friend, Amanda (Jennifer Esposito) is waiting for her drinking champagne. She tells Samantha she hates her mother and hasn’t spoken to her in over two years, this shocks Samantha into confronting her mother about their problems. Samantha decides to trust Amanda and the two take off to the apartment she shares with Todd (Barry Watson) her boyfriend.
Once inside the apartment she asks to check the messages so she can figure out more about her life. Basically she hears messages from Todd’s friends saying they’re glad Samantha is in acoma and generally refer to her as a monster. Samantha’s starting to realize she’s a little worse than bad and she doesn’t seem to be ok with it. While adapting to her new life, Andrea calls and tells Samantha she needs to get it together and come to Renee’s birthday. Samanth takes Todd with her as a security blanket. Once she gets there she tells Todd she doesn’t even know herself & Todd spits out a bunch of her inane idiocyncracies that wouldn’t even matter if she wasn’t a mental midget, but suddenly she is impressed with Todd’s amazing attention to detail. That is, until she goes into the club and reazlises and few things: she’s an alcoholic, Renee is a man and her lover & she’s been a major bitch her entire life. Which leads her to the age old question, if you have the chance to start your life over exactly what parts would you want to change?
I bet you anything this show will get picked up. It’s fluffy without being trite and silly without being stupid. It’s the sort of thing the American public lives for. A bad girl gone good, but having to fight to keep her inner bitch under control. Personally, I cannot tell you if I think the show will be any good, but I bet it will be around for a while. The only worthy part of this entire show is Jennifer Esposito, but half of that is the fact that she’s hot-as-hell, and I bet you won’t even disagree with me on that.
