The truth hurts. I know somewhere along the lines the American public got it in there heads that the truth will set them free, but that is a total crock. I’m sure if Don Henley knew about carpooling it wouldn’t have been The Boys of Summer, but rather, The Boys of the Carpool Lane. This week we catch the guys playing an all time favorite game of mine, Who Would You Do? Mostly, this is the sort of game you play on long road trips or while drinking so you can take back any of your prior, loose tongued admissions.
The rules of Who Would You Do?are simple. Basically, you are confronted with two equally unappealing choices to choose as your sexual partner. The point is that it shouldn’t take you a lot of thought to come to a decision—it is a split second decision making game, which is the part that makes it fun and time consuming. After a few rounds of the game and still a ways to get to work Gracen (Fred Goss) tells the guys that his wife says his particular sex ritual is too boring for words. Dougie (Tim Pepper) chimes in that he keeps things fresh and exciting, even though he is a newly wed, by keeping a date night with his wife. Laird (Jerry O’Connell) says this is a ridiculously stupid idea, but since he’s the divorced guy within the group everyone takes this as a sign that he has no idea what he’s talking about and Aubrey (Jerry Minor) and Gracen decide to take Dougie’s advice.
Everything for Gracen seems to be going well. He shows up to pick up his wife, Leila (Faith Ford), with flowers and bring her to dinner. The two seem to be having a great time. Suddenly Gracen brings up the Who Would You Do? game. Leila says it sounds silly and he presses the issue that it is a great time and hilarious. Do you see where this is going? When you play games like this with your significant other it will always end poorly, and by poorly I mean divorce papers or the setting of clothes on fire in the front yard as the neighbors gather around to watch you meltdown. Finally, Gracen goads Leila into playing and they exclaim at the same time who they’d each like to have sex with. While Gracen chooses anonymous starlet that doesn’t matter Leila says she’d have sex with Laird, Gracen’s best friend and carpooling buddy.
In the meantime, Aubrey is attempting to have his own date night. He brings out the coconut scented self-heating body oil while wooing his wife and telling her that he’s gotten rid of the kids and it’s just them for the evening. He takes the oil and looks at his wife sexily when one of the kids pops his head from around the corner. Turns out one of the kids is on a reconnaissance mission and still active inside the perimeters of the house. When Aubrey notices this he squeezes the body oil and it gets in his eyes blinding and burning him. Awesome.
The next day Dougie picks up Aubrey & Gracen to hear that date night went horribly for both. Aubrey says he had to spend his in the emergency room while Gracen gives no explanation, and cuts off storytelling time when Laird is late and tells Dougie to leave without him. Laird emerges from his house as Dougie starts to drive and the chase begins. Gracen sits in the backseat of the car and yells at Dougie not to stop for Laird, but eventually Laird catches up and jumps in the car. There’s an awkward pause and Gracen says that he’s having a party that Laird isn’t invited to because it’s for couples only. It’s not like Laird cannot find someone to bring, right?
Before & during the party Gracen gives Leila hell for saying Laird’s name during the Who Would You Do? game. Dougie & his wife, Cindy (Alison Munn) go all out to try and make a great impression on the neighbors when Cindy ends up pouring her drink on Laird. Laird ends up taking his shirt off and Gracen throws a fit over Laird’s body to Leila in the kitchen where the two makeup when Leila calls Laird a screw up that she could never love. Laird hears this and runs off. Meanwhile, Cindy’s hiding in the bathroom while Dougie coaxes her out of there. Aubrey catches them and says he still hasn’t had any time with his wife because they had to bring their kids to the date night party. Cindy tells him to go home right then because people are at the party watching the kids. Cindy ends up a hero as she walks off into the party with her dress tucked into her pantyhose. Hero indeed.
