ABC keeps saying SAMANTHA WHO? is the number one comedy in America. I’ve been watching for the past three weeks and I can tell you either ABC is lying or America can no longer register “funny”. Either way, it’s a terrible travesty when a sitcom like SAMANTHA WHO? sweeps the nation.
This week Samantha (Christina Applegate) putzes around the apartment formerly shared with her boyfriend Todd (Berry Watson), listening to countless amounts of voicemails from people accusing her of various indiscretions. She screams “I’M SORRY!” into her answering maching as her outgoing voicemail. It looks like the new Samantha is going to have to spend the rest of her natural life making up for the stuff she’s already done. On her way out of the apartment building the doorman gives Samantha a dress dropped off from the tailor. It’s a bridesmaid dress! Good God someone actually made the mistake of inviting this bitch to be apart of their wedding party. Shall hilarious times ensue? Probably not!
So Samantha, her best friend Dena (Melissa McCarthy), & her parents decide to share a room in this swank hotel and attend the wedding. When Samantha gets there she runs into Todd, hired to photograph the wedding, & Andrea (Jennifer Espositio) who tell her she was uninvited by the bride. When the bride sees Samantha she throws a drink in her face. Andrea goes onto explain that she decided to attend the wedding because the bride owns a yacht and she needs people like that in her life. Andrea must be from Los Angeles. Samantha then decides to leave and goes upstairs with Dena. Dena gives her a speech telling her that she should go and make her presence known to the bride and apologize, showing the bride she’s an entirely new person.
Samantha goes up to the bride and tells her that she has amnesia and she has no idea what went on, but that she’s sorry and wants to make amends. The bride says that Samantha used that excuse when she crashed her Maserati. Samantha is my sort of bad egg, too bad she’s totally worried about being nice now. BORING. All of her friends: Todd, Dena & Andrea sit around trying to figure out why she wants to apologize so badly and are dumbfounded when they realize there’s no catch, but that she just wants to do what’s right. Eventually, the bride forgives her and she’s allowed back into the wedding party & Dena is left to sit by herself at the table for social rejects.
Samantha forgets all about Dena during this time and basks in the glory of being popular once again. Dena gets wasted and tells Todd that nothing about Samantha has changed and she’s still the same rotten person. Dena then kisses Todd and leaves. Meanwhile, the bride insists that Samantha give a toast, but Samantha’s had a flashback and she realizes that everyone in the wedding party was sleeping with everyone else & her toast ignites an argument over the infidelity. Samantha escapes the chaos, looking for Dena & Todd tells her Dena left. Samantha goes to Dena’s house and apologizes for what happened and the two agree to continue being friends.
Aww, how boring, lame, stupid and unfunny. Christina Applegate plays a much better straight (wo)man to someone else’s out of control, offhanded character, but what do I know? I am totally unfunny myself. Right?
THE CLOSER, “Manhunt”
I love this show. At first, I felt like Brenda Leigh might grate on me, but I adore her. The more I watch it, the more I love it. The stories are a bit far-fetched, but I love the way it looks and the writing and the acting. It's a lot of fun and Kyra Sedgwick has really created a great character, in my opinion.
