BROTHERS AND SISTERS -- "Two Places"

By Jennifer Larson

Now that Kitty (Calista Flockhart) is pregnant, her family will be intervening into her relationship with Robert (Rob Lowe) even more than every before. Come on, you know the Walker’s will be swarming all over the new mother-to-be, and they’ll be smothering her with advice, warnings and most of all love. The good news is that everybody else’s lives are so messed up right now they will be scattered into a gaggle of different directions. I mean you’ve got Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) in the middle of a nasty custody battle with her ex, Justin (Dave Annable) recovering from his war injury, and unbeknownst to the family yet, beginning to slide back into his drug addiction. Than there’s Tommy (Balthazar Getty), whose in the midst of losing his family, and his recent affair with his office manager sure isn’t going to help the situation. So see, Kitty isn’t the only one who has issues the family needs to butt into.

However, Kitty is very close to her family, and when there is a setback with one of them she needs to call in another advisor to help with Robert’s presidential campaign. That’s a lucky thing for us, because that new advisor is played by Danny Glover, who is one of the best actors out there, if you ask me. And now that Robert has aced his first debate, he’s got more at stake, so he can use all the brilliant spin doctors he can get. Now if he can just get somebody to help him through the maze of the Walker family life. After all, you’re never number one when you marry into that family. Well, maybe you’re number one, you just have to share that spot with everybody else that comes along with marrying one of them.

So first off, Kitty needs extra help with Robert’s campaign because of the inopportune timing of her pregnancy, so that setback in the family was actually caused by her … this time. And as if she isn’t busy and stressed out enough, he advises her that she must marry her intended within two days or he will most assuredly lose the election. Wow, haven’t we come farther than that? Granted, Robert is running on the Republican ticket, but still there has to be more open-minded Republicans out there … right? Ok, maybe not, but if it’s ok for Robert to have an openly gay brother, why can’t he have a fiancé with a bun in the oven? Even with all that, Kitty is in a better place in life than her sister Sarah, who has to read her children their bedtime stories over the phone, since she lost primary custody of them in last week’s episode of BROTHERS AND SISTERS. And Tommy … don’t get me started on that one. With all that carrying on with his office manager, he’ll be the next Walker fighting for custody of their kid.

But all that has to wait, because Nora (Sally field) is on a mission; she has been given the responsibility of planning Kitty’s wedding in just two days. Of course, as much as she may squawk, you know this mother of the bride loves being in control of any part of her daughter’s life. She also seems to like Robert’s new advisor, however, Robert isn’t too keen on him. Apparently Isaac (Danny Glover) is known as the guy you call in when your campaign is in the toilette, and clearly Kitty believes getting pregnant before they are married puts it in the toilette. Again I ask, what century are we in? Anyway, Isaac seems to be here to stay, whether Robert likes it or not. The worst part is that all this finagling is for not because Kitty’s pregnancy is not viable. At least that’s how the doctor put it. I don’t really know what that means other than there will be no baby. It’s a terrible blow emotionally, but it may be the best thing for Robert’s campaign. That’s the world of politics folks; of course no baby means there won’t be a shot gun wedding either, which is probably just as well.

Things just aren’t going well for the Walkers this week. It seems as if Tommy and Justin have a thing for the same girl. You know, that horrible friend of Rebeccas (Emily VanCamp) who threw herself at the very married Tommy, well now she has a thing for Justin as well. Yeah, bringing their half-sister from their father’s long-time affair into the family fold was a great idea. But truthfully you can’t blame the poor girl; she just wanted a night out without the Walkers. And not only did Justin invite himself along, he slobbered all over her friend as well.

So as we leave the Walkers for another week, I’m left to wonder what else could possibly happen to these people. But I’m sure I’ll find out next week.
