HEROES -- "Chapter Seven: Out Of Time"

By Faith McQuinn

When Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) and Caitlin (Katie Carr) ended up one year in the future last week, I was worried that this week’s episode of was going to mimic last year’s future-seeing episode. Gladly, that was not the case. It seems that 2008 is a dark time in the world, and spending tons of time there would have made for a very boring show. Instead, we split our time among present day, the future, and the feudal past.

Of tonight’s storylines, I have to say Hiro’s (Masi Oka) was the best. Last we saw him, Hiro had been betrayed by Kensei (David Anders). Now, with the help of Yaeko (Eriko Tamura), he must stop White Beard from destroying Japan. Hiro saves the day, has a sword fight with Kensei, and right before the tent full of gun powder explodes, Kensei vows to hurt everyone and everything Hiro ever loves.

Hiro thinks nothing of this since Kensei is burned to a crisp in the explosion, but come on. If Claire (Hayden Penettiere) can survive a nuclear Ted encounter, then I think a little gunpowder won’t do too much to Kensei. Not so surprisingly, I’m right. Kensei’s reappearance in the world makes me really wonder if the same person is attacking the elder heroes. Hmm …

Bob (Stephen Tobolowsky) seems to think so. The mysterious Adam is behind all the terrorizing, but he uses Matt’s dad Maury (Alan Blumenfeld) as a weapon. How this works exactly, I’m still trying to figure out. All I can say is that even though I think Maury is one scary mother, I have to thank him for bringing about the eminent demise of Niki/Jessica (Ali Larter). I will not apologize for this cruel statement. I think Niki is one of the most useless heroes on the show, and when it’s revealed that there’s no cure for the virus floating around in her body, I did a little happy dance.

Now if we could just get rid of Alejandro (Shalim Ortiz) and create the super-evil couple of Sylar and Maya (Zachary Quinto and Dania Ramirez), I’ll be set.

I digress. While Maury is attacking Bob and the Company, West (Nicholas D’Agosto) is getting to know Claire’s family. Claire decides she must finally tell West about her dad, but of course, she can’t get it out before Noah (Jack Coleman) walks in the front door. West freaks. Claire explains. West flies away. It’s the way of young love, you know. If a girl’s father abducts you, it’s kind of hard to stay with her.

Peter and Caitlin are still stuck in 2008 where the virus, which I assume is the same one Bob told Mohinder (Sendhill Ramamurthy) about, has killed of 95 percent of the world. In a reunion with Mom (Cristine Rose), Peter finally begins to remember his life. What I’m trying to figure out is if Angela helped him out at all. What is Angela’s power? I really, really want to know! Helped or not, Peter does remember, and he’s going quietly with Angela back home (wherever that might be). As they’re leaving, he catches sight of Caitlin. Wanting to rescue her, he loses control of his powers and ends up back in Montreal circa 2007.

The most fascinating element of this week’s episode is that almost every single painting Noah and the Haitian found appeared in the episode. Hiro and Kensei fight. Peter stands near a biohazard sign. Niki beats on a door. Mohinder’s nose is broken, and he has the gun, but on whom is he going to use it? It’s questions like these that keep me watching week after week.
