Apparently the truth is still out there somewhere because a sequel to the 1998
X-FILES movie is set to land in theaters on July 25, 2008.
As of yet untitled, the X-FILES sequel will re-unite series creator Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny (
CALIFORNIACTION) and Gillian Anderson, who will reprise their roles of paranormal FBI investigators Mulder and Scully. The film is being co-written by Carter and long time series collaborator Frank Spotnitz, who also co-wrote the first film.
This latest installment will involve its own stand alone story, which promises to offer the usual thrills and chills that made the series a cult hit during is run from 1993–2002. The sequel will also take the hot/cold relationship between Mulder and Scully in bold new directions — something fanboys have fantasized about since the series inception.
The nearly decade-long wait to bring the X-FILES sequel to the theaters stemmed from a lawsuit Chris Carter filed against studio 20th Century Fox in 2005, citing unfair practices in how the studio was divvying out the show’s syndication profits. That suit was eventually settled, Duchovny and Anderson were brought back to the table and the sequel was green-lit. It will begin shooting in December, on location in Vancouver.
X-FILES the movie grossed $187 million worldwide in 1998, when the show was still at the peak of its cult popularity. However much time has passed since then and we now find ourselves living in the age of J.J. Abrams, whose brand of mystery-drama-thriller (LOST and the upcoming
FRINGE) now rule the airwaves. Does the X-FILES name still hold enough weight to make the second film a hit? Rant back and let us know what you think.
