I guess most of Americans have suffered intellectual trauma by way of the Disneyification of fairy tales because it wasn’t apparent to people that Grimm Fairy Tales, were just that, grim. Sam (Jared Padelecki) & Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester stumbled upon a news article talking about a possible werewolf attack so they head out to check the details of the attack. The survivor, one of three brothers arguing over the most efficient way to build houses says a man with a tattoo of Wyle Coyote on his bicep appeared out of nowhere and mauled his brothers, killing them. Sam asks specific questions pertaining to a werewolf attack, but the victim shoots them down, saying his brother’s are dead and this isn’t some sort of joke. Sam and Dean look at each other, relating because they know that Sam & Dean have both died in the past year, and Dean’s number is coming up shortly.
While investigating the attack at the hospital they stumble upon another attack. A man and woman got lost in the forest and find themselves deep at the edge of the forest in front of a small cottage. An old lady emerges and tells them they’re super far from civilization, inviting them in for something to eat. The woman laments saying they should turn around and be on their way while the man disagrees with her saying he’s hungry and it would be nice to rest with the kind old lady for a while. The old woman feeds the two pie and milk. As they begin to get up the man falls and the woman asks the old lady if she’s drugged them. The old lady goes into a state of lamented psychosis and starts cackling as she takes out a butcher knife and guts the man in a way that I can only describe as fucking insane. Anyways, while this is happening the camera pans over to a window and you see a pale girl dressed in while staring at the scene—because I am a genus it was at this point I figured out the entire point of the episode.
So far we’ve dealt with The Three Little Pigs, Hansel & Gretel and what appears to be Snow White (via the girl staring in the window). Sam & Dean go to speak with the woman (Gretel) and she explains to them what went on, but moreover she notes the strangeness of seeing the girl in the window. It’s at this point that Sam realizes they’re dealing with fairy tales & explains to Dean that the original tales were very gruesome because they were rooted in folklore and used as cautionary tales. The twosome decides to investigate possible deaths of young girls because they realize the girl is an unsettled spirit. Finally, someone mentions that the head doctor’s daughter’s been in a coma for over a year after accidentally drinking bleach or something horrible. Sam makes the connection that her step-mother poisoned her and she’s trying to tell people what happened.
While this is going on Dean’s trying to stop the big bad wolf from swallowing Little Red Riding Hood hole. As Dean fights off the Big Bad Wolf, Sam succeeds in getting Snow White’s father to concede to the fact that his wife, Snow White’s step mother poisoned her on purpose. When he does this, it releases his daughter’s trapped soul and the possession she has over the town’s people ends & the spell is broken. Too bad the writers for Supernatural are realists and it does not end with the spell being broken with true love’s kiss. It does, however, end with Sam leaving Dean in the middle of the night and confronting the demon at the crossroads in Mississippi. He tells her to break the pact she made with Dean. When she refuses Sam shoots her and asks questions later. Sam’s going to have major repercussions for doing this, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see what they are.
