Apparently its ok to just throw out random twists to characters and plots on CANE.
The episode started with Frank in the middle of a gambling bender. Apparently Frank has a gambling problem and owed 500K around town for his debts—but who knew? As far as I know this episode was the first mention of it.
While Frank was rolling craps, the rest of the family was muddling around as usual. Apparently Jamie Vega’s girl Rebecca was less blonde Florida beauty than white trash girl from the everglades—probably why she was nervous about her father coming to visit. Even though man turned out to be trashy, and Jamie accosted him for being a bad father, Rebecca still loved him. Isabel got friendly with Ellis Samuels, who had wooed her way back into Frank’s arms. Henry continued to try to woo new Duque master-blender Terry, inviting her to his exclusive pool-party. Terry showed up, with her boyfriend, an Astrophysicist, or something, much to Henry’s chagrin.
On the business side Alex’s new Cuban gangster buddies helped him sort out a mess with truckers stealing from his rum shipments. In exchange the gangsters angled to become Alex’s new trucking partners, and they even did him the favor of exposing Frank’s addiction and buying up his debt so that Frank wouldn’t get hurt. When Alex tried to confront his brother, Frank decked him. Then the two of them, Isabel and Ellis Samuels got together for dinner—awkward!
Of course dinner was a disaster, one that climaxed with the FBI showing up to ‘speak with’ Ms. Samuels. Apparently her daddy had pushed her onto the sword of using illegal shell companies to buy up land from Castro. Loving family. The episode ended with Alex meeting Ellis Samuels to see what game she was playing, only to have it revealed that she and Alex used to carry torches for one another…. Um, ok, RANDOM anyone?
Apparently CANE is spiraling into soap-opera madness. This episode felt so disjointed and tangential that I really don’t know what the producers are doing up there at CBS. None of the previous storylines were further developed and these new random developments in the characters feel clunky, like the stuff you start to do when you run out of steam after eight seasons, not eight episodes.
Come on CANE, I might be the only one, but I expect better from you.
