What’s a director to do when he tackles every seeming topic in his genre? In Ridley Scott’s case, you agree to design a feature length film on Gucci empire and the drama surrounding it, reports
Variety. Fox2000 is backing the film, picking it up after Paramount Pictures threw it into turnaround. Scott Free and Giannina Facio are set to produce it. Once the WGA strike ends Charles Randolph is set to begin writing the script.
The Gucci story sounds a bit like the fabricated drama going on within the Meade family in the ABC comedy, UGLY BETTY. The film will highlight the height of the Gucci empire during it’s height in the 1970s and ‘80s when it earned $500 million in annual revenue.
Most of the drama revolves around Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of the elusive Guccio Gucci, founder of the Gucci dynasty. Maurizio wins control of the fashion kingdom after a bloody power struggle with the rest of the Gucci family. As Maurizio garnishes success and reaches the height of his career, his past catches up with him and he’s gunned down in front of his Milan apartment.
Scott’s currently in Morocco directing BODY OF LIES with Leonardo Di Caprio and his muse Russell Crowe. Honestly, I just want to see this movie get underway because I’m dying to see how Scott works manly Russell Crowe into a movie about a bunch of Italian fashionistas.
