UGLY BETTY -- "Bananas For Betty"

By Sabrina Cognata

This week UGLY BETTY provides us with two-sibling rivalry inspired storylines.  To begin, you have Alexis (Rebecca Romijn) and Daniel (Eric Maibus) Meade painfully watching the video their father left behind explaining his choice to run the Meade publishing empire.  Too bad Betty (America Ferrera) interrupts him causing him to get confused and accidentally turn off the camera before he gets a chance to tell them his choice.  The two siblings then turn to their mother for help, but she says if they do not figure it out between the two of them she will get a woman named Hatchet to come over and straighten them out.  Ah, a woman of my own heart.

Now Daniel and Alexis have fought over a lot in their time, including, but not limited to a tree house they had when they were kids.  In the spirit of acting like morons the two of them decide the only way to fairly choose the President of Meade Publications is through a paintball match—the same way they decided the fate of their tree house when they were children.  I guess these idiots would be better off flipping a coin, but instead we get to see Alexis running around in white spandex.  I have to admit that might be the first and only time in my life where I will look at a woman in WHITE SPANDEX and be completely impressed.

Betty, on the other hand, invites Gio (Freddy Rodriguez) over to her house to help with the transportation of the stuff Hilda (Ana Ortiz) needs to start her in-house hair salon.  While he’s there he woos Hilda with his clever jokes and masculine personality.  While Hilda decides to ask Gio on a date, Betty finds herself jealous and tries to get Henry to do some of the wildly romantic things Henry (Christopher Gorham) talks about doing with the object of his affection.

First Betty tries to get freaky by eating a hot fudge sundae off of Henry’s washboard abs, but that turns into a mess, literally, and she gives up after burning Henry’s stomach and her face.  Next, she begs Henry to go dancing with Hilda and Gio.  Henry goes bananas while at the dance club and sets himself on fire when Betty tries to drag him onto the dance floor.  Stupid Betty, social activities are not for accountants with ripped bodies.

Daniel and Alexis form two teams and prepare for their paintball challenge.  At the last minute, the crappy, rainy day weather forces the Meade siblings to take the outdoor paintball challenge indoors at Mode magazine.  Alexis uses a take no prisoners’ tactic and quickly takes out Daniel’s entire team.  In the final moments of the game Daniel catches Alexis after she drops her gun and when he should take her out and win control of the entire company he offers her his hand and says they should run the company together.  Alexis hugs Daniel and everything looks like things are gonna go along peachy-keeno until Alexis grabs for Daniel’s gun and shoots him saying that she only let him win the tree house when they were kids because it was a stupid tree house.  I guess things are not totally mended between the Meade siblings.

Betty’s dealing with her own set of problems as she’s trying to force Henry to act sensational and passionate like Gio.  After Henry flips out Betty does what fat loser-idiot does when the only man that will date her leaves—she calls him and apologizes for him acting like a moron.  While making this call she notices Henry on the dance floor attempting to make hot dance moves and immediately falls back into love with his geeky, washboard abs.  Gio and Hilda congratulate Henry on his slick dance moves and offer to buy drinks, but Betty says she and Henry are going home to spend countless boring hours together.  Gio watches longingly as Betty and Henry canoodle on their way out of the club as Hilda seems hurt by Gio’s creepy Betty crush.
