It was confirmed this week that 20th Century Fox had managed to nab acclaimed director John Singleton (FOUR BROTHERS, BOYZ N’ THE HOOD) to direct a feature film reboot of classic 80’s TV series,
THE A-TEAM.
In case you’re new to planet Earth, the A-TEAM was a TV show about a group of Vietnam vets turned do-gooder outlaws, when the military framed them for a crime they didn’t commit. The show was noted for its formula of camp-meets-action, and its uncanny way of ensuring that no one ever died, despite dozens of car crashes, shoot-outs and explosions.
For those (haters) mortified by the thought of the A-TEAM making a modern-day comeback, you can rest easy. The “reboot” will update every aspect of the show, including changing the ‘team from Vietnam vets to contemporary soldiers, reflective of this era’s politics, and substituting the over-the-top camp with a more serious, edge-of-your-seat tone “in the vein of
DIE HARD and LETHAL WEAPON.”
Stephen J. Cannell, who created the original series, is producing the remake as well, and added:
“Not to denigrate the TV show, but nobody ever died… We’re not going to do that (in the movie). In this the tone is more dangerous—you can really die. It’s very tense and exciting.”
Now I know the fist question likely on your mind, but unfortunately at this stage we still do not know who will fill the gold-chains of Sgt. “B.A.” Baracus, originally made famous by Mr. T. (If anyone would like to launch an “anybody but Tyrese Gibson” campaign, feel free to do so now.)
Does John Singleton seem like the “A” choice for the job? Rant back and let us know what you think about THE A-TEAM coming back to the screen.
