Critical Look: THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON

By Kofi Outlaw

One of my favorite directors hands down is David Fincher, the director of such darkly lavish films as FIGHT CLUB, THE GAME, and last year’s grossly underrated ZODIAC. Oh, and ALIEN 3, but we forgive him for that one. I was recently surprised to learn that Fincher’s next project will be an adaptation of the 1922 short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, entitled THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON.

The film will star Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton. It will follow the tale of Benjamin Button, who is born an old man and ages in reverse, living out a regressive existence that spans from the post-WWI era, into the twenty-first century. Like the story the film will examine themes of time, the journey of life, and all the transition and change that they bring. I’m interested to see how Fincher’s neon-noir style will translate to such classic Americana fare; in the opinion of one costume designer working on BUTTON, the end product will be impressive.

“Top to bottom she said the set and production was a dream, that both David Fincher and Brad Pitt were consummate professionals, and that the script was top-notch—the only script she can recall making her cry, she said. She added that the look and scope of design of the film while ambitious is also intricate and exacting.

“Furthermore she mentioned that some of the sequences they saw that had been edited were absolutely stunning. Her description of the mood of those who worked on it is that of bated breath—a near universal belief that they have made an outstanding and moving film, one that transcends and one they wish not to jinx by too much loose talk.”

Okay, so not exactly an unbiased opinion, but you never know. Rant back and let us know if THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is a film you want to keep on your radar, or if you wouldn’t care about it if we paid you. Wish I aged in reverse… Baby me was quite the little player…

CALIFORNICATION -- "Fear And Loathing At The Fundraiser"
this show is alright. I cant really put my finger on it , but there is just something missing. I dont really understand moody' character yet i still find myself in a love/hate relationship with him. The only character i can actually understand in this show is his ex-girlfriend. The writers need to have more of a storyline if they want me to continue to watch this show.
