Comic book auteur Alan Moore is notorious for his disapproval of how the film industry treats his work. He had no problem verbally bashing the creators of V FOR VENDETTA for their ‘liberal take’ on his graphic novel. Well Moore is
back at it again, as he recently made it known that he WILL NOT be taking an active interest in director Zack Snyder’s (300) adaptation of his groundbreaking graphic novel,
THE WATCHMEN.
Moore’s aversion to WATCHMEN comes as little surprise—though it should be noted that Dave Gibbons, the artist who worked with Moore to create WATCHMEN, has had nothing but praise for how Snyder and Co. are re-creating the world of the comic, sticking closely to the blueprint of Gibbons’ original artwork.
Wizard Magazine recently sat down with Alan Moore to discuss, among other things, his views on the upcoming WATCHMEN:
“I spoke to Dave [Gibbons] the other day. I got a piece of paper—they must’ve learned something from the V for Vendetta debacle. I got a piece of paper a couple of months ago saying, “I, the undersigned, hereby give you permission to take my name off of the film and to send my money to Dave Gibbons.” So I sent that back to them all signed and sealed, which means that now I don’t have to rant and spew about the film. I’m just simply not interested in it. Dave phoned me up, and it’s always nice to talk to Dave, but he understands that I’m not really interested in ‘Watchmen…’ No, I’m keeping well away from all of that.”
Never one to lose his sense of humor, Snyder told fans at Comic Con 2007 that hopefully, one day, Alan Moore will watch the DVD of WATCHMEN and say, “You know, they didn’t f@#% it up that bad.”
Do think Alan Moore should get off his high horse and give WATCHMEN a chance? Or is creative snobbery your sort of bag, baby? Rant back and let us know.
