Critical Look: YES MAN

By Kofi Outlaw

It seems Jim Carey is trying to return to his comedic roots (and box office draw) with his latest film, entitled YES MAN. The story follows Carl Allen (Carrey), a downtrodden loser who enters a self-help program with one simple mantra: say yes to any and everything.

Following the usual comedic formula, at first the program transforms Allen’s life into a world of wide, wondrous (and hopefully hilarious) opportunity. However, eventually the rose shows its thorns, as Allen must learn to strike a balance between the sad sack he once was, and the exuberant hedonist he’s become. Basically it’s THE MASK for the Dr. Phil generation.

YES MAN will co-star Zooey Deschanel, Bradley Cooper, Rhys Darby, John Michael Higgins, Danny Masterson, and Terence Stamp. The film will be directed by Peyton Reed (BRING IT ON).

Do think Carey still has it in him to bring the funny in this brave new age of Apatow? Or has that ship sailed away, never to return? Rant back and let us know.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS: Kofi's Take
I'd agree, after being very impressed by the books, but it's worth mentioning that New Line set this up to be a trilogy, as is so popular these days, and the screenplay writers and director watered down the first film on purpose. They wanted to gently introduce people to the world of Pullman's fantasy before hitting the themes hard. I don't expect much from this first film, but it can't be any worse than Spiderman 3. ;)Theoretically, "The Subtle Knife" will be darker, more streamlined, and will settle some questions left from "The Golden Compass."
