CASHMERE MAFIA -- "Dangerous Liasons"

By Jennifer Larson

As I sat down and prepared to enjoy an evening of entertaining TV, I remembered I had to review this piece of trash. Nobody said life was fair, so I hunkered down and psyched myself up for what I was sure to be a painful and uninspiring hour. I wish I could tell you how wrong I turned out to be, but alas, this show still hasn’t grown on me. In fact, in this age of gorilla promotion and snap decisions, I fully expected CASHMERE MAFIA to be pulled from the air by now. I guess you can chalk this up to yet another consequence of the long, drawn out writer’s strike. That being said, I will now inform you of what was put on the air and dared to be called TV drama.

To start off with, the resident trendy lesbian, Caitlin (Bonnie Somerville), got outed by an equally trendy gossip blog. Ah, you gotta love those bloggers, always on the prowl for the latest and juiciest dirt. Meanwhile, Juliet is still mulling over the idea of commencing operation get back at cheating husband by seriously considering having an affair with an old college flame. Personally, I think she should just taunt her husband with the possibility of the affair instead of actually doing it. I mean once she does the nasty with this guy, the whole thing is over and her husband will feel he’s off the hook. Why not drag it out and prolong his anxiety and agony? I’m just saying that’s the perfect way to get back at him and keep her hands clean. And speaking of men, Mia (Lucy Liu) is having some problems with the gruffer sex as well.

Now that Mia is the head cheese, she has to find a new editor to relaunch Modern Man Magazine. This may be her toughest challenge to date because as it turns out, there is some serious clashing of the minds between these two. Not only does Mia have to deal with a difficult new hire, she also has to find a way to work with employees hired by her former fiancé. If you remember, and why would you because really, is anybody else out there being forced to watch this show, he broke up with Mia after losing the big promotion to her. Than there’s the mother of the year, Zoe (Frances O’Connor), who is still trying to keep her husband from straying with that hot neighborhood mother, find a decent nanny to raise her kids and keep up with all her lunch and dinner dates with her four best girlfriends. It’s just another day in the lives of New York’s finest female citizens.

Unfortunately, Zoe may be losing more than just her husband; it seems as if her company’s buxom blond research assistant may be after her job. Watching said research assistant follow the boss into his hotel room was probably her first clue. But I don’t know what’s worse, watching your job slip through your fingers or getting a ginormous zit in the middle of your forehead right before a big date with your new girlfriend. Yes, even middle-aged women have to deal with acne every now and again as Caitlin sadly discovered, and it doesn’t really matter what age you are, first date jitters are always the same.

Ultimately, Juliet decided I was right; it’s better to scare a man with the threat of cheating than actually following through with it, Mia came to terms with the end of her relationship and embraced the powerful woman that she is and Zoe’s scheming research assistant was promoted to full-fledged associate. But Zoe took it all in stride and went home to seduce her husband. I guess she figured she could at least save her marriage, if not her job. As for Caitlin, well let’s just say she’s a card carrying member of the lesbian community; at least for now.
