A new year means newer and hopefully better films than ever before. EVER BEFORE! I mean, at least it should, especially to studios that have to keep people returning to theaters year-after-year to see what generally is the crap they regift to audiences worldwide. Even though I am sure most of this years up and coming films are going to be worthless, there are a few that I anticipate being diamonds gleaming within boundless heaps of trash. As I am wont to do, I have come up with an exhilarating list highlighting more of my extremely important decisions on what probably will be EXCELLENT CINEMA IN 2008. Read the list inside.

The Producers Union released this statement after the deal was made: “The agreement between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and the Directors Guild of America establishes an important precedent: Our industry’s creative talent will now participate financially in every emerging area of new media. The agreement demonstrates beyond any doubt that our industry’s producers are willing and able to work with the creators of entertainment content to establish fair and flexible rules for this fast-changing marketplace. Does this mean the strike could be over soon? We hope. Find out more inside.

If there is anything positive about the writers’ strike, it’s that viewers in search of something fresh will sample THE WIRE. Once they do they finally will recognize what many of us have been saying the last four years – it is one of the best shows on the tube.

The most thought-provoking story arc this season involves Tasha (Rose Rollins), a woman whose dreams of a military career become a nightmare when she is accused of homosexual activity. The situation becomes menacing when two military officers kind of push their way into her girlfriend Alice’s (Leisha Hailey) apartment. Technically, the major and lieutenant didn’t violate any laws. But they got in by intimidating her.

After last weeks drama between Sean (Dylan Walsh) and Christian (Julian McMahon) things have settled and peace is reestablished within their medical practice. Christian talks Sean into staying at the beach house while other things at home continue to go haywire. Julia (Joely Richardson) continues to become sicker while Christian claims it’s entirely a psychosis. Things are complicated by the fact that Christian’s psycho-ex and mother of his son Wilbur, Gina (Jessalyn Gilsig) has been hired as the new receptionist. Regardless of her HIV+ status, she manages to tempt Christian into a psycho sex drama that she defines as therapy.

Oh how I look forward to watching this brilliantly written and acted show, especially considering how dismal the new programming this past Fall was. Don’t even get me started on some of the mid-season replacements we’re beginning to see flood the TV landscape. I swear, I think my four-year-old nephew could do a better job of coming up with creative and entertaining shows than the people in charge right now. Than again, lazy and unimaginative programming is nothing new in the TV industry. In fact, sometimes I feel more energy is put into the marketing of these shows than the creation of them. But I digress; tonight is about the excellence that can be achieved when talent and effort come together.
