…As the world moves one step closer to the Apocalypse. The pop-culture spoof MEET THE SPARTANS proved this week that America’s collective I.Q. continues to plummet, as the Britney-slaying Spartans managed to ‘stomp the yard’ all the way to the top of the weekend
box office, grossing $18.7 million along the way.

The winners of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival were
announced this past weekend. The films which receive top honors were selected by a joint panel consisting of audiences who attended the screenings, and celebrity jurors Marcia Gay Harden, Sandra Oh, and Diego Luna, Mary Harron and Quentin Tarantino. Since all the other major movie networks are doing it, I guess Starz is feeling a bit of the bandwagon pressure and has announced it’s plans to air a series based on the 2006 Academy Award winning film, CRASH. Find out more inside.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS OSAMA BIN LADEN? The newest documentary from SUPER SIZE ME director Morgan Spurlock, recently debuted at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, and has so far garnered mixed reviews.The film documents Spurlock’s real-life search for the nefarious Al-Queda leader, a journey which took him from Washington D.C., to the Middle East, and allegedly put his life in some very real danger. In the wake of New Line Cinemas dispute resolution with famed director Peter Jackson it’s been announced that Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct back-to-back installments of the even geekier HOBBIT. In case you’re high on crack right now and cannot place Guillermo del Toro he’s responsible for the highly acclaimed PAN’S LABRYNTH as well as HELLBOY, BLADE II and the yet to be released HELLBOY II.

David Bowers, whose animated film résumé includes classic fare such as WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, and more recent CGI fare such as rats-in-the-toilet flick FLUSHED AWAY, has been tapped to
helm the CG-animated adaptation of Japense Manga and 60’s cartoon hero ASTRO BOY.

THE KING OF KONG falls into the category of films I like to the call "Little Engines That You Never Thought Would, But They Could Anyhow." On paper, a documentary about two video game players going after the world record high score on
Donkey Kong doesn't sound that thrilling, does it? You're probably thinking that you'd either need to be a) a video game nut, b) a documentary nut, or c) someone who just likes odd trivia. Well, you'd be wrong on all counts. I went and saw this movie with a slew of people who weren't video gamers or documentary fans, and we all loved this movie. Now you can pick it up on DVD with a ton of extras and relive the mullet-haired competition in your own home.
