Blackfilm is reporting that singer Beyonce Knowles has been cast in the role of acclaimed R&B singer Etta James, for the upcoming music bio film, CADILLAC RECORDS. The story follows the rise and fall of Chess Records, the 1950’s rhythm & blues label which fostered the careers of R&B legends such as Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry.
Adrien Brody will replace Matt Dillon in the lead role of Leonard Chess, the label’s founder, who toured Southern circuits, scouting new R&B talent while selling records out of trunk of his Cadillac (hence the title.) Cedric The Entertainer will play the role of Willie Dixon, the man who wrote most of Chess Records’ biggest hits. Jeffery Wright will take on the role of blues legend Muddy Waters.
Darnell Martin (THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD) wrote the script and will direct the film for Sony BMG. Also slated to costar are Emmanuelle Chriqui, Columbus Short and Tammy Blanchard.
Can Beyonce play any other role than a singer? Or is CADILLAC RECORDS the kind of film she should stick to? Rant back and let us know.
