Transformers — Decidedly Less Than Meets the Eye

Some of you may be aware that Michael Bay and company held a contest that allowed fans of TRANFORMERS (a group known on the Internet and elsewhere as TransFans) to submit lines to be spoken by the Autobots and Decepticons in the movie. Yes, this film, derived from an ‘80s cartoon, has a die-hard fan base, and an ornery group at that. It’s become a bit cliché to ridicule such a group, especially with the Trekkies and STAR WARS fanatics crowding up cyberspace aplenty. But, it’s such a sweet moment when, as with the increasingly lame STAR WARS prequels, these dorky cash cows are treated to something truly terrible. And, as the insanely hokey one-liners spewed from Optimus Prime’s huge, vacant head, I relished in the fact that it was — in part — the TransFans’ fault. Not even the fact that they brought in the voice actor for WINNIE THE POOH’s Eeyore makes this crap comically tolerable. The two and a half hour-long CG-fest is like a miserable car commercial with dreams of becoming a real boy.

The plot of TRANSFORMERS is fitting for a Saturday morning season of cartoons — not a feature film. The Transformers once lived in peace on their own planet, where they protected a mysterious cube called the Allspark. The Allspark contains a great energy capable of bringing inanimate objects, such as electronic devices, to life. The Transformers were once the custodians of the device, and maintained a peaceful civilization. Until, of course, Megatron leads a faction of power-hungry robots intent on using the Allspark for evil. During the ensuing battle, the Transformer civilization is sent into ruins and the Allspark disappears into space, only to be discovered on Earth thousands of years later. That’s the whole plot.

Dane McCarthy, chill. I expected a movie with really cool Micheal Bay effects and a really lame Micheal Bay plot. What I got was spectacular CGI/effects and a decent plot that had some good humor and acting in it....Yes, I like the term "Reagan-y" and you're right on with that analysis...I'm also with you on the GM commercial thing...but man, you hammered it way to hard...What did you expect? It exceeded my expectations....Maybe you should have had your coffee or don't sit next to some wild kids when you watch ..you may be less annoyed and might enjoy the blockbuster for what it is: A good time.

Why the hell woud I pay to see a car & toy commercial?

McCarthy said: "There are plenty of venues where Michael Bay hate-speeches are welcomed. I’ll save my effort here, because there’s really nothing new to say."

Yeah, it ain't new but here it is anyway...Michael Bay sucks! After sitting through four crappy Bay-directed movies (Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) I'm done with this guy. Three strikes and you're out...four and you're even more out.

I think Dane was very critical with Transformers. I worked on this movie (that's not why I like it) and there were so many new camera trams made for it. Of course the robots were CG, but what happened to the just good old time of having fun at the movies. The kids loved it, the cars were very cool. I have often wondered why theses "critics" aren't writting the next big, perfect movie?

FOR YOU TO HAVE SUCH NEGATIVE THINGS TO SAY ABOUT A GREAT MOVIE YOU COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A FAN OF THE CARTOON SERIES. I THINK THAT IT WAS PULLED OFF PERFECTLY. THE ACTORS (ALL OF THEM) WERE GREAT AND IF YOU DIDNT SEE ANY EFFECT OR EMOTION ON THERE FACES YOU MUST NOT HAVE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION. AND AS FOR YOU COMMENTS ON THE TRANFORMERS LINES IN THE MOVIE, HOW COULD YOU NOT FIND THEM FUNNY? THE LINES ABOUT THE PARENTS TO THE "LUBRICATING" MOJO AND THE RODENT INFESTATION WERE CLASSIC. HOW ELSE WERE THEY SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE MOVIE FUN FOR THE ADULT FANS WATCHING AND STILL BE APPROPRIATE FOR THERE KIDS. THE MOVIE DID HAVE A PG RATING, THERES ONLY SO MUCH YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH. I SUGGEST YOU GET OVER YOUR SMUG SELF AND GET A SENSE OF HUMOR. IF YOU CANT ENJOY A GOOD MOVIE FOR WHAT IT IS YOU SHOULD STAY AT HOME AND PLAY ON YOUR WORLD OF WAR CRAFT.

As someone who watched the original cartoons, I felt that the movie did not disappoint nor did it take itself too seriously.
I don’t see how anyone could actually think it is a good movie. I LOVED the cartoon as a child, and was disappointed to see nothing remotely resembling the original series besides a few character names.

Everything was seen from the human's perspective.

The main villain wasn’t introduced until the 3rd act of the movie, and even then he had no personality.

Most of the transformers had no personality or dialogue.

The humans were among the most annoying cast i have ever seen.

The idea that human technology is a threat to sophisticated alien robots is completely absurd.

The tone of the film seems to have been designed with sugar-rushing six year-olds in mind.

Yes, the special effects and the action sequences were spectacular. So what? The script was a joke.

Well, all you idiots out there that say they saw this movie, and didn't like it, or don't want to see it are just plain assholes!! Can I say that?? I didn't think I would like this movie so much, but I was expecting cartoons, more then real person's. What a shock. I not only like it, but it is so good, I wish I hadn't seen it so I can go again!! It is about a team of people working together for the greater good!! To me a moviie about saving the earth, no matter how child like it may sound, is a good movie. After seeing the previews, It looked more real, then I expected, so I took a chance, and right away, I knew I made the best choice!! Its up there with harry potter, and the fantastic four, and the order of the rings, and etc. So guys, and gals, go and see it again, and this time open your mine a little more, and you may learn something!!
