I’ve been to the fourth level of Hell, and it’s on Fox and hosted by Wayne Brady. There was a time not so long ago — in fact it was earlier this evening — when I truly enjoyed television. I was killing a half hour before my assignment to watch DON’T FORGET THE LYRICS!, and I happened across a repeat of AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. In it, I saw a grown man called “Ms. J” coaching wannabe models on how to walk on cobblestones with high heels while wearing a mask. He was wearing a satin maroon babydoll cocktail dress. And nobody mentioned it. That was great TV. This show, DON’T FORGET THE LYRICS!, is not. Imagine karaoke without the beer. Imagine WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE, only off-key. Imagine earning double my annual salary based on a freaking Bangles lyric.   Wayne Brady, struggling to stay in showbiz, is the perky host. I remember a Wayne Brady from WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY that was quite an amusing entertainer. I’m positive this is some other Wayne Brady. Wayne invites a guest to center stage where the contestant must choose from nine (NINE!?) music categories (1980s, Girl Bands, Pop, Classic Rock, Divas, Rhythm and Blues, Country, Rock, Rolling Stones.) Then, the contestant sings for what seems like an eternity to a song in the chosen category. The words stop and s/he must supply the next few lyrics. The more correct answers, the more money earned, with the potential to win a million bucks. Answer wrong and you get the boot. The sad thing is, this show will probably make it. I mean, look at Jerry Springer...If that guy can stay on the air with the crap on his shows, this show could be a big hit. We do have a bunch of mindless idiots in this world. And the thought of it makes me sick to my stomach. Karaoke by a bunch of sober, horrible singing people, when Im drunk OR sober, just does not sit well with me. As a matter of fact, I think I will start a petition to axe Karaoke all together, and DAMN the person that started this whole mess to begin with. Sing in the shower, in your car, in your own home. But do us all a favor, when were having a good time enjoying a tall cold one at our local establishment and you feel the need to sing, just remember these three words. Yes. It's a pretty painful experience to anyone with an ear and any musical feel to watch this show, BUT I like Wayne Brady enough to sometimes tune in just to see his reactions to and mimicry of the wannabes (he's extremely polite, but you can tell he's choking inside sometimes). However, Karaoke killed most music and definitely all meaningful vocal entertainment, and this is pretty much one of the final nails in that coffin. I found this site by accident trying to find a "Don't Forget The Lyrics Game" It cracked me up when I read some of the blogs. I had to immediately go tell my husband about it and he thought I was kidding. His response was, "There really is a Karaoke hate site"? "Wow people have too much time on their hands."
